Mengendarai est née d'une tentative d'écouter les sons du deuil dans le paysage de Jogjakarta, révélant au contraire la présence constante des scooters qui hantent les paysages sonores et la vie quotidienne. En associant le scooter à l'absence fantomatique du cheval et au rituel hypnotique du Jathilan, l'œuvre explore la manière dont les scooters, à l'instar des corps rituels, transportent les gens au-delà du monde matériel vers des états de dissociation, d'intimité et de contact élémentaire. La sculpture qui en résulte réfléchit à la mobilité, à la spiritualité et aux formes d'occupation, s'interrogeant sur la manière dont les véhicules importés sur le territoire façonnent à la fois le paysage et la façon dont ses habitants abordent la vie, la mort et la transcendance.

Mengendarai began with an attempt to hear the sounds of mourning in Jogja’s landscape, revealing instead the constant presence of motorcycles that haunt soundscapes and daily life. By linking the motorcycle to the ghostly absence of the horse and the trance-ridden ritual of Jathilan, the work explores how motorcycles—much like ritual bodies—carry people beyond the material world into states of dissociation, intimacy, and elemental contact. The resulting sculpture reflects on mobility, spirituality, and forms of occupation, questioning how imported vehicles shape both the land and the ways its inhabitants navigate life, death, and transcendence.
